How to Choose a Yoga Teacher Training

It’s almost 2020 and the yoga scene has changed dramatically over the past decade. There’s been massive growth of yoga studios around the world, as well as a shift to online platforms. With the rise of social media, we now have yoga celebrities and influencers who are changing the dynamics of representation.

One of the biggest changes we’ve seen in the yoga world is the rise of yoga schools offering teacher trainings. Doing a simple Google search can be so overwhelming you might get anxious trying to decide which one is credible or what you’re looking for. If you’re looking into completing your yoga teacher training, this is likely a big decision in your life and will change things for you. It’s important to start off on the right foot. That’s why we’ve come up with a few things to look for while researching yoga schools.

1) Lead Teacher Trainers

One of the first things you should look at it is who you will be learning from. What training and teaching experience does this teacher have? How long have they been teaching, what sort of style do they focus on, what do they find important? Read their bios, ask questions through email or phone and see if they click with what you’re looking for. Here at evolation yoga, you can read up on our teachers; and if you’re still not convinced, you can ask them more questions by phone or email before committing!

2) Location

It’s always all about location, isn’t it? Are you looking for something close to home, or do you want to get away and completely dive into your yoga journey in a new and exciting environment? Does this school offer one location or many? Do you want to study in Hawaii, Bali, California… or even online? Check our our website for all these locations and more.

3) Reputation

Something that really tips people towards a decision is hearing a personalized recommendation. You want to hear from someone who’s been through a training with said school to tell you what it’s really like. Send an email to whatever schools you’re researching and find a graduate you can talk to. They will have all the information you’re looking for, as someone who’s been through it. This way they can get a feel for what kind of training you’re interested in, and tell you if you’re in the right place.

4) Values

Yoga today varies widely, and so do yoga schools. Do you want to focus on yoga philosophy, meditation, physical alignment, or otherwise? There are a lot of different avenues to discover, and sometimes it can hard to gage what you will be learning most about from one school to another. Look for a values page on every website. Does it align with your vision, your practice, and your own personal philosophy? Language is very important. See if you connect with the words being presented.

5) Years Active & Experience

Personally, we find this the MOST important. If you were going to have a procedure done, you would want the surgeon with the most experience and knowledge. You want someone who’s been through this procedure many times and knows what they’re doing. Yes, yoga teacher training is obviously different from a surgical procedure but it’s still a very meaningful & intricate transformational process you will be going through. For it to be meaningful, you need a strong, knowledgable person to guide you through the experience. A school and it’s teachers who have lead trainings for many years know how to guide a diverse range of students and what works best for everybody.

And evolation yoga is one of the longest-running yoga schools around, with over 10 years under our belt and nearly 120 trainings completed.
