How to Maintain Your Hot Yoga Practice at Home

As many of us transition into varying degrees of isolation due to Covid-19, here at Evolation we’ve received the following question from multiple students:

How can I maintain my hot yoga practice from home?

If you’re a hot yoga practitioner, you might think it would be difficult to replicate the physical and mental benefits from a “proper” hot yoga class. We know it’s all about that full-body sweat... But we’re pleased to inform you that it only takes a few small adjustments to enjoy your practice from home.

Here are our best tips:

  1. If you have access to an infrared space heater, they can heat up a small space very quickly. Otherwise, crank the heat or use some humidity from a steaming shower.

  2. It’s all about that opening pranayama! This breathing exercise is designed to WARM up the body, so really give it your all, and stay committed to that ocean breath throughout the rest of the practice.

  3. Don’t expect the same depth as in your regular yoga class. You’ll have to accept that with less external heat, your body won’t be as flexible as you’re used to. Instead, try to focus on stability and strength. Can you keep the muscles secure and engaged from start to finish? This is an excellent opportunity to explore other aspects of your practice.

  4. Wear some extra layers! Socks, sweaters, and more will help you to build that body heat; and you can always shed the extra layers if you need later on.

  5. Warm up before your class with some stretches, jumping jacks, push ups, dancing… the choice is yours (albeit space-dependent).

  6. Finally — live-stream your hot yoga class from Evolation Yoga (no need to memorize postures!). Access our daily schedule and practice online with some of our best teachers, including co-founders Mark & Zefea and senior evolation trainers like Elias Gaitan and Christian Scaraglino. We’ve already received grateful reviews about feeling connected and grounded.
